A lesson on my own and the biggest I have ever jumped!

Todays plans had a few changes in them but they were all for the best. As you will know I had a great time jumping Gatsby yesterday but I was knackered by the time I got in bed, I got in bed at 8 and went to sleep within about 5 minutes and slept through until about 10ish. When I got up mum told me that there was going to be a change of plans, instead of getting to the stables for 12:30 I got to the stables for 11:30. Fiona said that she would explain when we got there and when she did explain it made a lot more sense. With only having Gatsby and Rocky that we can use I was going to ride Gatsby early on my own and do some jumping I was all for this. In stead of riding for an hour I rode for 45 minutes but it was more consistent work and I wasn't being as lazy as I tend to be, I was working harder and trying to build my stamina up.

I got Gatsby ready to get on him at 12:15, we started warming him up and making sure that from the beginning he is active. Fiona told me not to worry about getting him in an outline and focusing on building my confidence. At E and B we put down some trot poles, on one side there was three poles and on the other side there was five poles, Fiona suggested that I work towards jumping two jumps. still staying in trot to get me to be a bit more active. We went over both sets of poles linking them doing the circuit 2 times, starting off going over the poles in rising trot and then move on to going over them in the jump position. I was able to do this quite easily without having to think about it, only making sure that he doesn't drift to the right. We then changed the set of three poles to a cross rail, we went over that (still in a trot) we'd go over the jump, then over the five trot poles, then go over the jump again and finish going over the five poles. We then put the jump up to a vertical at about 2 foot ish, I did the same thing a couple of times with the only different things being that it was a vertical, we then put the next jump up and went straight to doing that at a vertical. First Fiona and my mum said that it was the same height and it was just an optical illusion that they looked higher but this one was level with Fiona's hip it wasn't far off being 3 foot. The first jump was a level 2 jump and the second was a level 3 jump. I went over it without any problems not even worrying about the height that it was just 100% trusting Gatsby and Fiona! I really did love it! We carried on jumping them both twice on a continuos lap. I loved it, and can't wait to jump more. I could see how much Gatsby was enjoying it as well and that's one of the most important things! I then cooled him down and Alice rode him for her lesson.

This afternoon I had a two hour driving lesson because my test is coming up soon! We practiced doing all over the moves that I could be asked to do and I felt a lot more confident. We also did it in the area that I did my test. I can't wait to do my test and hopefully pass it so that I can go where I want when I want to! It's going to be really fun and of course I can then go to the stables when I want to not have to rely on other people being free to do it!

Oh I almost forgot there are pictures to come of my riding today, after all it isn't true without photographs or videos ;)

Some serious Jumping fun!!

I love jumping and I've only recently realised it. I bet nobody saw that coming! Ever since I was little I had this image in my head of being able to get on and jump without having a care in the world and now I feel like I can do that!

Today was the last day of the summer holiday, it seems like this whole holiday has gone so fast and soon I'm going to be at Uni and back to being at the Stables less but I will still be there come rain, snow and sunshine! This morning we mucked out the stables and I put Gatsby some new bedding down I love the pelleted bedding that we use and being able to watch it expand. The morning seemed to fly by so fast, I did Gatsby and Fussy's stables, I was so proud of my bedding in Fussy's stable, I know that sounds silly but it was the best I'd ever got it, the banks looked good and it made me want to lie in it myself! When it got to lunch time Fiona told us that we were all going to have half an hour lesson on our own! My mind instantly jumped to the idea of jumping (no pun intended) and Fiona saw the look on my face and knew what I wanted to do. After we had had lunch I Was the first one to ride so we went to fetch Gatsby and Rascal in from the field and I was surprised to learn that everyone was going to be watching my lesson! Maisie helped me to groom and tack Gatsby up and then she helped me to put bandages on Gatsby's front legs, I was surprised that I could remember how to do them. While I started to warm Gatsby up the other girls bought jump wings and poles in to the school. I started off with what I thought was quite short stirrups (they felt it), but when I went to put them up another hole I realised they were actually on the hole that I put them on for flat work but they felt so short! I quickly moved in to trot and I was pleased to find that he was forward moving and as Fiona put it 'pingy', he listened to my leg aids and was so responsive. When we had got going I went over the trot poles a couple of times, on the left rein when we went over the poles Gatsby and I were drifting towards the right. When we changed to the right rein he was perfect we were in the middle and straight!!! Fiona to start with put up a cross rail jump up with trotting poles leading up to it! We went over that a couple of times and it felt great! Every time that we landed Gatsby went straight in to canter, so Fiona asked if I was happy and I said that I was feeling confident so we put it up to a vertical (I think Fiona said that it was 2 foot), this was the biggest height that I have ever jumped and Fiona told me to trust Gatsby so I did! I trust this horse with my life and he rewarded me with such a nice jump, we repeated it a couple of times and it felt GREAT! When I got off the other girls had their lessons and while they were doing that I filled up hay nets, finished putting Gatsby's bed down and then Maisie and I spent some time with Corrie giving her some TLC, but there's more to come about Corrie later.

After receiving my iMac this morning. My mum and I were sitting in my room when my dad asked if I would like to go for a walk. So we went on the same work that we went on yesterday. It really is a lovely walk and the great thing about is that it is underneath a canopy (not sure of that's the right word) of trees, so even when the sun is shining it never gets too hot. We have decided that we think that the walk is about 30-40 minutes long and is between 1 and 2 miles, The animals were all out in the fields again but I forgot to get any photographs for you guys.

When we had finished the walk we sat talking for a while before I drove my dad to the hospital for him to get some blood tests done. Then we drove back and I spent some more time chilling getting to know my mac a bit more. I can not wait to start University, I'm going to learn so much and be able to build on skills that I already have. As well as develop knew skills, I love the fact that by doing a foundation year I get to do more than just photography, I will be doing art and other media studies as well as doing some more fashion. The most important thing for me about doing the course is to become more confident in the things that I am doing and not doubting myself.

Then at lunch time we picked my brother, his girlfriend and his best friend in to town and while I was out with my mum I got a McDonalds. I haven't got any plans for tonight other than to relax and read because once I go to university I know I'm not going to have the time to do the amount of reading that I am doing at the minute.

University Mac and Software

This morning I had to be up nice and early for the installation and delivery of my Mac. As you all probably know I have a macbook Air, that I purchased because it was light weight and usable but also because it was going to be good for photography. Then when I started applying for Uni I realised that realistically the screen was going to be too small for me to be able to edit photographs properly.

So when it came to being accepted at University I then had to go for Interviews to do with Disability Allowance because of my long term chronic stomach pain, and through this it was decided that I would be able to get an iMac and software for it (for example a dictating software and planning software) as well as an olympus recorder so that I could record the lectures then be able to put them on my computer and take out of them the most important things. All of this was to be able to help me study better and improve my revision strategies and things like this. So this morning when it arrived I was pretty excited months ago I'd bought a desk so that it would be able to be in my room.

When it arrived it had all the software already installed and I had the option that he could show me how to use it or I could learn to use it myself. I chose the second option because in my opinion it is the way that I would learn the best. Then I have been spending time applying for the student version of CC Cloud by adobe this allowed me to use all the adobe programmes for a certain amount each month!

Now I'm off to explore more about my mac.

Mucking Out and Chilling Out

Today has been a relatively simple day, although at the same time it has been a completely exhausting day! I woke up in time to get dressed have some toast and go out the door to be at the yard for 8am this morning. When we got there we turned all the horses out and got to work on mucking out, I was going a lot slower than normal because I think I've pulled the muscle in my left leg so putting pressure on it is either completely fine or a nightmare. When we had got all the stables mucked out and some of them had their haynets put in, we decided it was time for a cup of tea! Fiona arrived to say hi with Daniel while we were drinking our tea and as they were leaving we decided to move on to doing the rest of the haynets. Well Elaine walked towards the hay barn only to find that in the middle of the Hay Barn was Sam! Sam had managed to get in and was standing munching on they hay, what can I say he's a horse with character? When Elaine went to take him out of the barn he then decided the way out (the same way as he got in) was far too scary! We finished filling all the haynets just as my mum was arriving.

Tabby thought it would be fun to supervise Elaine and I filling haynets. She climbed al the way up to the top of the hay barn and sat on the wooden beam! Such a cute Kitty, while her brother watched from below!

When I got home I took my Uncle out for a drive in my car (my driving practice as it's 10days until my test) and went to fill my car up with Petrol, then when I got back I just chilled out. I watched some T.V. with my mum, then I planned to curl up in bed and have a short nap after not sleeping well last night, instead I spent the evening and afternoon in my room either watching T.V., playing on my laptop or reading! The plus side to this was that I got to finish my book 'A Horse Called Hero' by Sam Angus! It was such a good book, if your a horse lover and love reading then this book is for you, it bought a tear to my eyes in a couple of places but it was definitely worth reading!
A Horse Called Hero - Sam Angus! All I have to say is if you haven't read it, you should! :P

Best In Hand and Turn Out Show - 26th August 2013

Yesterday was the pony club in hand and best turn out show. When we got there Fiona had already chosen the horse and person combinations, and I was quite surprised but looking forward to having Sam. Sam's one of the newer ponys at the stables. We had an hour and a half to brush and groom them however we wanted to we could bath them if we wanted to, so I set to work going all over his body with a brush first. I knew from the beginning that I could not do his mane and tale because his Mane used to be hogged and is only just starting to be grown back (where he was before hogged him because he had sweet itch). His tale I think at some point had been pulled but I think that he has been rubbing it as well, so that meant that plaiting him was out of the question but I was okay with that. Instead I spent some time trying to get his white socks clean and then I washed his tale. I liked doing this although Sam didn't always like it but we got there in the end. I then went over his tale with a brush all though I will admit that it could have been brushed better. The last thing that I did was oil his hooves inside and outside. I enjoyed working with Sam he can be quite stubborn at times but I had to work past that and get on with what I wanted to do. I then cleaned his bridle (although I think that I missed a bit on it) got changed in to my show gear and was ready to go.

We then took all of the horses down to the school and walked around, we did a couple of laps in walk. Then we all came to a halt and did a lap each in trot. When we had all finished this we stood in the middle, then one at a time we went up to Fiona so that she could check how well groomed they were. We then had to walk in a straight line down to the bottom of the school then trot back up to the top and return to our place in the line. When we had all done this we then carried on walking around the school while Fiona and Elaine judged some more. In total there were three prizes to win.

The first class was the Best Groomed horse, there were 50 marks to get and I got 47. I got 9 for a clean body and legs (some dust on his back), 9 for a well brushed tail (needed brushing more), 9 for a Clean Bridle, 10 for a plaited or neat mane and 10 for oiled hoofs in and out. In the first class I came joint second with two others.

The second class was for the Best Young Handler, in this class the highest score was also 50 marks and I got 50! Getting straights 10s in Lead on a correct side, Active walk, Active Trot, Pony Listens to Voice commands and Stands Pony Up Correctly. In this class I came joint first.

Finally to find the overall winner the marks from the first two classes were added together and then we also got marks out of 10 for correct dress of handler (I got 9 all I needed was a Coat, I'd left mine at home because I thought it was too warm) and 10 for Clean Boots, Tidy Hair, Gloves (I got 10 in this). So my overall mark out of 120 was 116. This put me in Overall First Place winning a Free Half An Hour Private Lesson as well as a bar of chocolate! :D.

After we had finished this it was time for the normal Pony Club meeting, other than the 6 of us no one else turned up for Pony Club so we got told we could do what we want. So we decided that we would have a chilled out Pony Club including playing hide and seek in the fields, then sitting in the fields talking about what badges we would like to do next in Pony Club, we also got to ask Fiona and Elaine any questions that we could think of. When it was half an hour before the end we got to put the horses to bed. I chose Gatsby, so skipped him out, filled up his water bucket and hung his haynet. Then it was time to go home. I had such a good time and can't wait to use my free 1/2 hour private lesson.

Jumping Gatsby - 24/08/2013

Yesterday I had my weekly riding lesson, I already knew that I was going to be jumping because Fiona had told me so the day before.

When I got on we spent a shorter amount of time working with my stirrups at my flat length (during the warm up and a small amount of trot) before putting them up three holes for my jump length. The first thing I noticed was that my ankles were going to ache and so was my hip and while I was nervous I was looking forward to jumping Gatsby. While I was doing some trot work with Gatsby Fiona and Steph (a lady that's going to be there most Saturdays that Fiona is teaching to do her BHS IA, I think!) set up to sets of trot poles one down each side. One had four poles and the other had three poles and was set up with the jump wings on each side. We went over the jumps a couple of times just doing rising trot then moved on to moving in to my jump seat. When I felt confident doing this Fiona asked if I was happy to move up to jumping, which I was. We started off with something that was fairly small to build my confidence up, we approached the jump in trot and before the jump we had some trot poles set up to. Gatsby soon told us that he thought the jump was too small so we moved it up when we were happy with jumping on my good rein we moved on to jumping on my bad rein. I was amazed that I didn't feel nervous and was actually looking forward to doing it. So we put the jump up a bit higher and Fiona said that just because the jump was higher didn't mean that I needed to rush the jump. So I took a deep breath kept calm and jumped it, the first time Gatsby didn't realise that we had made it bigger so just clipped the poles but didn't knock them down. After that though things went really well, he put in an odd stride once but I wasn't worried about it so was able to keep moving with him. The most important thing I learnt was to stay relax and enjoy it. I could feel and see how much Gatsby was clearly loving it and so happy with what we were doing and I loved that! So here's some video's for you! :)

Let me know what you guys think! You can also find more of my videos with Gatsby by following this link :)

Sorry for not posting the past few days there's just not been a lot going on until today. This afternoon I went up at 1pm to my stables to see how the back person works with horses it fascinates me and I loved being able to watch it. Seeing how different things all move together, not the best description but I can't think of the right words! The original plan was that I would go home at 3, but instead I got more horse time! Fiona and Elaine said that I could go with them to look at a horse, so that was really fun because it's not something that I've ever really done before. It was an interesting experience, and Clyde was a sweet horse but wasn't the right horse for Elaine. But I really enjoyed the experience it helped me with kind of knowing where I need to go in the future.

When we got back to the yard, the bedding had been delivered so I helped Elaine to move some of the bags of bedding. Then Fiona said that while she was riding Vettie that I could ride Gatsby so that was really interesting. It was fun to watch Fiona ride while I was riding, and I definitely came to the conclusion that going backward is the way forward. It was a good ride and a good evening. Tomorrow I've got a lesson to my self so that should be interesting  I think we are going to be doing some jumping work but I'm not 100% sure!

Money Evaluation and Equine Show Wish List

So for a while I've been wanting to do a post that is more for me than anyone else. This post is about the money I spend on riding and also things that I will need in the future.

Every year I spend £1080 on riding lessons (one lesson every week of the year). I then also do Pony Club on a Monday night a year's worth of Pony Club (one meeting a week, every week of the year) would be £520. So thats £1600, this doesn't include any of the own a pony day's or extra activities that I do. I am so lucky to have a family that supports my riding life style and definitely think that it is more a life style than a Hobby.

Now on to things that I would like or need in my riding future. The first thing on the list is a new riding Hat that I can then use for competition, I've decided that I would like a black velvet one, as blacks the colour that I prefer. When looking on the internet I found two that I like. The first one is a Gatehouse Hickstead Velvet Riding Hat this costs £86.50. The second one I like because it has some sparkle to it! It's the Gatehouse Hickstead Velvet Hat with Crystal Bow. Now this is more expensive because of the crystals but I love it, I've always liked sparkles and if I had an infinite amount of money I would buy this without thinking twice. However it is £112.50.

Gatehouse Hickstead Velvet hat in black with a crystal bow. I love this hat so much!
The next thing that I would like to have for if I was doing competitions is a new show jacket. The first one that I ever bought was a grey and pink show jacket, I love it but it won't match my black riding hat.  So the one that I would like is the Katie Price Show Jacket with pink piping and buttons! I love this jacket and it costs £59.99. The second jacket that I like is the Pikeur Sarissa Show coat, I love it! It looks fitted and comfy and I love the subtly white piping that it's got. However it costs £169.99, so I think that's just slightly out of my price range but wouldn't that be nice!

Pikeur Sarissa Show Coat - I LOVE the white piping and my riding teacher always recommends this make!
The next thing that I would like to buy is a pair of really nice boots! I've got my long boots that are great for winter, and I have got my short black ankle boots. However I haven't got any long competition boots and I haven't got the right chaps to go with my short boots so the search for boots begin. The first that boots that I really like are the Dublin On Air Stretch Dress Boots. They of course are black they are simple and they have a zip up the back of them which will make them easier to fit as I have got wider calfs.

Dublin On Air Stretch Dress Boots
Obviously there are other things that I would need but for me these are the three most important things. If I could only buy three things these are the three things that I would buy! Now to get rich quick so that I can buy them. Anyone got any ideas?

First of all  I would like to say that if you haven't already you should head over and read Slow and Steady wins the race. I love reading Amy's blog and the adventures that she has with Steady! Her blog is great fun and when she reaches 100 followers is going to hold a contest, so head over there now!

Today I went out and did some driving practice around the area that I a going to be doing my test, as it is less than a month until I will be doing my test! In fact I think that it is only two weeks away. Time seems to be flying past so fast at the minute. Before I went for my drive I helped my mum to trim our dog. We have a lovely Shih Tzu called Angel and when she was a puppy we first took her to someone who was a dog groomer and we ended up leaving with Angel half done so ever since then my mum has been trimming the dog, the only problem is Angel just doesn't like it. So we have to bribe her to sit nicely for mum to do the job. Then I've spent the rest of the afternoon chilling out watching some soaps and doing a bit of reading. It's only just starting to sink in for me that I really I am going to be going to University in September, it's such an exciting thing but I'm nervous at the same time!

Not sure what I'm doing tomorrow!

Dressage Test Practice.

Why is it when you think that you are going to do a dressage test, your brain freezes up, you can't think and you tense up? Well that was exactly what happened today. When we got there we all got given the tests that we would do I got to do a British Young Riders Dressage Scheme 'C Squad' test. This test included Walk, Trot, Canter, serpentines, 20m Circles and half 20m circles. We walked through our tests first and I noticed just how much canter work I would actually be doing and I think that this is the thing that I was most nervous about. When we had walked the test, we then tacked up the horses that we would be riding, we tacked up Gatsby, Rascal and Rocky. I rode Gatsby, JaimieLeigh rode Rascal and Mollie started off riding Rosie but then later switched to riding Rocky and JaimieLeigh got on Gatsby.

In walk all the horses was fine, Gatsby was active and stretching, he was responsive and listening well. Rascal and Rosie were also fine. JaimieLeigh and I are used to working in open order but this isn't something that Mollie was used to so Fiona said that she could pick one of us to follow. So she picked JaimieLeigh because they were doing the same test, so it was similar to working in open order. When we moved up to the trot Rascal didn't look good so he got put back away and JaimieLeigh got the choice that she could ride Gatsby or Rosie. So I took over trotting with Mollie but she wasn't happy on Rosie so switched on to being on Rocky but before she switched both JaimieLeigh and Fiona tried riding Rosie to see if she could still be used. While this was happening I popped Gatsby in to the canter to see how he was and he was great. He was really responsive and picked up the canter easily, this proved to me how mine and his riding is improving. I then had my first run through of the test and it was awful! My mind blocked and I couldn't remember what I was doing, where I was going, or even how to ride! I was also rushing which wasn't helping either me or Gatsby. I then did the test a second time and it was so much better. Fiona called out the test for me, and I thought to myself that I need to calm down and just treat it like a lesson because after all this is what it was. I was more relaxed and just let the practice flow, Gatsby cantered nicely and in some places we even got more of an outline. I was so happy with how the test went a second time but I was completely knackered. I have now decided that in my lessons I need to think like I'm riding a dressage test so that I can practice it and hopefully get over the nerves a little bit more.

After I rode my test JaimieLeigh rode hers on Gatsby and Mollie rode hers on Rocky, I also got to practice out calling out for a test. To start with I struggled knowing where to call out but eventually I got in to the swing of things, I just had to remember that  I needed to project my voice more as this is something that I wasn't doing very well.

Fiona also gave us all a copy of the test that we did and then also a sheet that shows the way the score the BYRDS Scheme uses works. It's great because the test is judged by two people, one who judges the movements that the rider is doing this is the person that controls the test. The second judge then judges the position and effectiveness of the rider. This is something that I think is so much more helpful because it focuses things more. She also then gave us a sheet showing what the judges are looking for so that we could under stand it more. My main problem is always that my legs are moving, but since I've had my hop sorted I am working so hard to get my lower leg to stay in place and slowly but surely it is getting there.

We then put the horses to bed and got ready to leave as there was no pony club this evening. I love my riding so much and even when I go to University it's not something that I am going to stop doing. The whole point of choosing a University that was local was so that I could live at home but also so I could keep riding, initially the plan was that it would be my own horse but after a lot of time and thinking I knew that this wasn't the right time to be finding a horse. One day I will find the right horse and I know exactly where it will be going!

Friday I get to go up to see the back lady working on the horses this is something that I have never seen and I can't wait to see. It's something that I have always found interesting and I can't wait to see how it really works as it is something that I have never seen before.

Backwards to go forwards?

For a while when I've been reading some things recently I started playing with the idea that backwards to go forwards might make more sense than I initially thought so yesterday towards the end of my riding lesson we started playing with that. Not long after we did that I was able to get Gatsby in to an outline and forwards. I could really feel his hind quarters coming underneath him and there was power behind his trot.

When I first started working with him I got a really nice stretch and forward moving walk, from the beginning I wanted to make sure that he was responsive and listening to me. When I picked him up it took a bit more convincing but eventually I was able to move him up in to the outline, it wasn't as good as the lesson we had before but it was still there. The most important thing to me was that we were getting the outline more and more often. I remember a time when I got it once every few months now I'm getting it nearly every week and I love the feeling of it. Gatsby isn't the easiest horse to get an outline of but I'm still able to do it and that means a lot to me. I can really see how much my riding is improving. I love that. When we got towards the end to evade me Gatsby started going backwards without being asked to, so instead we turned it into a rein back, he had to go Backwards when I asked him to and he had to move forwards when asked to! He became so much more forward and responsive. So next week we are going to work on that from the beginning and see if it is something that we can do and how it effects Gatsby.

Tomorrow I have a training day, we are going to be doing a dressage test and I can't wait for that. I am also going to do a post about what I spend on riding a year.

Today has been another day where I haven't done a lot but feel completely knackered. This morning I went up to the stables, it was windy and wet but we still had a really good time. It sounds odd but I love mucking out stables I find it therapeutic and relaxing. It didn't even bother me that it was cold and raining.

When I had finished there I helped my mum and uncle do the super market shopping. After that I went to visit my sister, nephew and her partner. It was nice because I haven't seen her in a while and Brody was really nice and loving. He was active and so funny, he was running all over the place keeping us all busy. He always makes me smile because he loves sharing.

Then tomorrow I am riding again, I just love my horse time!

After not sleeping all night last night, and waking up constantly, I found out at about 7:30 this morning that I HAVE GOT IN to Uni. So in September I will be a full time commercial photography student at Derby University. I was so worried about my exams and not getting the results that I wanted to get but I did get them. Out of my two subjects my strongest subject was going to be textiles or so I thought, but I was wrong, in English which I was most stressed about I managed to get a B! When I was predicted an E. I worked so hard to do what I wanted to do and get where I wanted and it seems like it's finally paid off!

Today had been a day where I haven't done a lot but feel completely exhausted. This morning I woke up far too early for me, normally I sleep until later on but for some reason my brain had decided that this was not going to be the case today, so I got up and dressed and watched T.V. for a while. Around lunch time my brother and his friend got up and I drove them to the gym then I came home. Later on I went to pick them up from town and when I got in I took my dad for a drive. Now I LOVE driving but my Dad always said that he would only get in a car with me after I passed my test but this rule got ignored and he's been out with me twice and both times he gave me constructive criticism  that I think will help to improve my driving. It also helped because I was trying to get everything out so it was a bit like being on my driving test.

When we got in the guy that was coming to look at our trees turned up (he only ended up being two and a half hours late). One of the trees that we have on my drive (the one above my car, I think its a sycamore tree) attracts a particular type of insect, these insects then create a honey like substance that drips on to my car, now while this isn't the end of the world it is a problem because it attracts WASPS! Now I'm petrified of wasps and my mum is highly allergic to wasps, so allergic that if she gets stung she has to go straight to A&E. The problem is all the trees that are in our garden have preservation orders on them so we can't get rid of them without permission, not only this but it would be a hugely expensive job as this tree has been there for years probably hundreds of years so it's a very long time. However today we had the tree guy out to tell us what work needs doing to other trees and what he could do about this one particular tree but we won't find the pricing out for a few days.

Tomorrow is the ever dreaded results day, I wouldn't have been stressed about this if I hadn't dropped my art but I did and I can't change that! So I'm going to have to hope that I get the results I need but I won't know until 9:30am tomorrow!

This was the drawing that I did on Gatsby showing the bones that he has. I never knew that horses have 18 ribs that is a lot of ribs. It was super fun and I think the look on my face say sit all.
This drawing on Gatsby isn't as good but it shows all the different Muscles (or at least some of them). It was fascinating to see both the muscles and the bones moving when lunging Gatsby I loved it.
This morning I had my referral dentist appointment to do with pulling a tooth out. When we got there we had a long wait and lots of paper work to fill in. The person seemed really nice and the colour scheme was black and pink (this was the first thing that I noticed). The dentist agreed with the work that needs doing and did an x-ray while I was there however he did get confused when it came to my medical history because of  how complex it is. When I'd had the x-ray all that was left to do was book the appointment to have the sedation for the work to be done. Bare in mind that I've had problems with this tooth for three or four months now, and it's extremely painful at times, the first appointment they had was the 8th October. However it could be later than this because at the moment I do not know my university time table. so I don't know what days I'll be able to go to the dentist or doctors, anything like that really. I also don't know when I am going to know this information. So the receptionist said just to book it in for the earliest date that they could do and then if it needed moving to ring them up as soon as possible to sort things out.

Tomorrow I haven't really gotten anything planned but on Thursday I get my results back from my exams that I did in May so it's safe to say I'm starting to get really nervous. Which is making me quite grumpy to be around.

Painting on Horses

Today has been a long but fun day, filled with lots of horse time. At 2pm I got to my stables, armed with face paint as we were going to be painting all the bone structors on the horses, this is something that has always fascinated me and I loved learning more about. When we first got there we went out to the fields to bring in Gatsby and Rascal, as well as Big Rocky and Soloman. Fiona gave us some sheets showing where the bones where on the horse and also more information about the muscles. I haven't fully read the sheets yet but found them really interesting (diagrams were really helpful). Before she unleashed us on to the horses on our own, she bought Solie out of his stable and showed us how to draw the parts on to the horse. For the next hour I spent time drawing all the bones on and then because I finished early on Gatsby's other side I drew on his muscles, this was a little bit more confusing but at the same time fascinating. I really enjoyed doing it and found it so helpful. I never realised how much muscle and ligaments there is, I thought there was more bone then there actually is.

At pony club we were not sure how many of us there were going to be, there ended up being 7 us. When we were sure that everyone was there we then went to work bringing in the rest of the horses. We then decided that that we would work on lunging the horses to see them moving and the bones moving. We bought the new jumps out of the trailer and put them just outside of the school. Fiona first demonstrated using Parelli with Tom who is 17.3hh and 13 years old. He was really nice and it was amazing to see how easily and happily he did it. Fiona then lunged him for a bit and also showed us her lunge jumping him, this was something that truly fascinates me. Tom looked really fluid and made it look really easy. At this point Rocky, Rascal and Gatsby had still got there paint on them so we put Rocky and Gatsby's Bridles on and Jaimie-Leigh and I lunged the two of them. We couldn't do this with Rascal because unfortunately he is lame at the minute. It was fascinating lunging Gatsby and being able to see all the movements of how the muscles and the bones move. We stuck to doing work, trot and canter on both reins and I loved it. I really enjoy lunging and it's something that I've never really done a lot of in the future so it's great to have the opportunity to do it.

When we had finished Lunging them, then four of us set to work on getting the paint off Gatsby it was a lot easier to do than I thought that it was going to be. He didn't look very impressed by the end but I had a great time doing it and I would love to do it again. I've learnt so much and can't wait to keep learning more about horses.

Tomorrow I will post the pictures from today.

At the end of my ride Fiona asked me what I had changed to get Gatsby going as well as he was doing, I said that the main thing was that I was sitting properly and in the right position everything was where it was supposed to be. I then mentioned that on Broomfield's Facebook page that they would be doing the winter league dressage again and I wanted to know in my mind if it was something that I could do, if I was able to get Gatsby working in an outline and also if I could keep him going in the outline. There is now a possibility that I might be taking Gatsby to Broomfield to do some of the winter league competitions but I needed to find out dates. So last night I sent a Facebook message to Steph who's in charge of the competitions and she told me that in September she will start accepting entries and then in October the Competitions will be starting.

Today has been another chilled out day. I didn't manage to get to sleep until 2am this morning, so had a lie in this morning. This afternoon my mum and I went out for my driving practice that we do most days, and then we had chicken and crusty bread for tea. After that I went in to my room with the intention to just chill out and relax, however instead I ended up falling asleep for a couple of hours.

Tomorrow I am going to be at West Hallam Riding Centre from 2pm as Fiona is doing a workshop kind of thing where we draw the bones on to the horse so we can see where they are. Then when we have done this we will get the horse to do some exercises so that we can see how they move when we ask the horse to do certain things. It's going to be really interesting and I can't wait to try it.

Outline Work

Today was a really good day at the stables, when I got there like normal I spent some time hugging and grooming Gatsby. When I got on the thing that I had to make sure that I was doing from the start was moving my hips and not restricting the movement. He was forward and so much more responsive, he was good to ride and you could see that he was listening and that was the best part.

When I asked him to move in to an outline he did it willingly and easily, it felt so nice to be able to do it without having to over think it. Fiona commented saying that we were doing well and to ask for more. I knew I could push him for more but I didn't know how much more I could push him. The moment I started to push him more it felt amazing, it was so easy to do and I realised that the key to getting it easier was to drop the weight down the back of my arms. It was so much easier than I thought it was going to be but it was so effective, all though by the end of it my arms were starting to really ache. When it got to about half way Fiona said to let him stretch and also that I could take my stirrups away. I took my stirrups away stretching both his and my muscles. However after we had stretched for about Five minutes when I was asking to pick Gatsby up in to an outline he wasn't as willing, he was telling me that he had had enough. I kept asking though for more from him and when I started to add the lateral work in to things he was really giving it to me. What I love about Gatsby is that the majority of the time he will try his best to do what you ask him to do. The best part about this ride was I got it on Video! At the end of the lesson we cooled him down but then he had got another lesson after me riding him.

Now on to the videos.

The past few days have been a little bit hectic. On Tuesday at the Bakewell Show Equestrian Day I had seen a black Bridle that had pink padding on the brow band and nose band and diamante on the brow band too. I LOVED it. On the day I was going to buy it, but the man on the stall was in the middle of a conversation and I didn't want to interrupt it so I decided that it didn't matter and I wouldn't get it. The next day I was kicking myself for not getting it, so when I went out with Dean and Sue they said they would take me to the shop to pick one up. Well when we got there we were told that they had no full bridles the only one they had got was pony. On and Off on Thursday Dean, Sue and I looked for another one that was similar and we just couldn't find one, so my mum said that it just wasn't the right time or place and I wasn't meant to have it. This made perfect sense to me and I do agree with it, one day I'll find one that was similar that day just wasn't Thursday.

Today I finally got my new personalised plate put on my car. I have had it since my birthday but it was going to cost more money to get it put on straight away so I had to wait until I needed to put more insurance on my car so today was that day. My mum and I drove to Nottingham and we were able to get it sorted really quickly then when my mum got home she drilled the holes in my new plates and put them on my car! I love them.

This afternoon my mum took me shopping to get some jeans for when I go to university, I've been putting off doing anything like this for the simple fact that I don't know what grades I've got and until I do I don't want to get my hopes up. But today Mum convinced me to go and look at some jeans that were on offer and I came home with three pairs, they were really comfy and I am glad that I've got them. Tomorrow when it is just me and my mum we are going to do some more shopping.

This evening I plan to curl up with a good book, have a nice hot bath and wash my hair, and watch some T.V. I just want to spend the evening relaxing and chilling out. Then tomorrow I get to ride Gatsby! After being at the stables more often, it feels like so much longer than a week since I've been there and I can not wait!

Yesterday I went to Bakewell County Show Equine Day it was the first year that they had done this show day and I was expecting it to be really good. It don't think that it lived up to my expectations for it but it was a good opportunity for me to practice doing my photography these are the shots that I am the happiest with so let me know what you guys think. Some of the shots towards the end have a blurred stripe along the bottom because of where the fence was, I wasn't quite tall enough to miss it!

I absolutely love this shot! It is a true action shot!

My Memories Suite V4 - Review.

So as all of you know My Memories offered me the opportunity to host a give away that can be found here. I was also given a free copy of the software to review and tell you all what I thought of it, so here's my review.

My memories is super easy to use, it is compatible with both Mac and Windows (PC). When you first open up My Memories Suite V4 you get three options the first is to Create an Album from Designer Templates, Design Your Own and to browse more content online. You also have an area at the bottom that gives you the opportunity to open any recent albums that you have created.

These are the three options that you will get when you open up My Memories Suite v4 and also the chance to open Recent Albums you have created.
If you open up the option to create an album from a designer template you will see another new window, this window gives you a list of all the different designs that you can use and if you click on one it shows an example of the album. This makes it really easy to use and helpful because it shows you what you can do you don't have to open each one to know what it looks like you can just see it.

The next window that you get carries on the simple to use theme, it shows you the pages that are already come in this template and above that they also give you the opportunity of all of the pages and you can drag them in to the box below then you can rearrange them into any order that you want. All you need to do is click and drag!

The second to last window, gives you the opportunity to input photographs manually and automatically. For me as I want to be more customising and unique, I use the manual input as I can be more selective as to what goes where. Personal I love that you can choose whether you want to do it manually or automatically it all depends on whether you want a quick and simple album or want to spend more time working on it.

The final window that you get is what you want to name the album, and where you want to save it to. It's simple and easy to use and it's quick. It doesn't take a long time and is easy to setup for someone that is busy and doesn't have a lot of spare time this is a great programme to use. All you have to do is click finish and it starts making the album for you.

Now you have all your pages set up all you need to do is add photographs, any embellishments that you want or text. To add photographs all you need to do is add the photograph and drag it in to where it says 'your photos here' and your photograph is where you want it to be. It's quick and easy to use and what I love is it's obvious what you need to do and is easy to use. You already have all your colour schemes sorted but can add to them if you want to.

First click the add button under where it says photograph (you can see this in the right hand side column of the print screen), you then drag the photograph in to the square or area where it says 'your photo'.
Here you can see what the photographs looked like when you drag them. At the bottom of the page in a rectangle box you can see all the pages that are in my 'Album'. The grey area around the square shows the area that would be cut off when printing or when Binding. Personally I think that this is great because you won't cut the picture off.
The next image I have shows you how easy it is to apply text. Whether you are a full time parent, working 24/7, or just a keen scrapbooker this programme is perfect for you. In the right hand column of the programme you will see that you have got a whole list of things that you can do (I will explore this more in the future). If you click on imprint that is near the bottom and then word art you will get a whole load of quotes that you can add to your album.

Click on the caption that you like the look of and then press apply to it. It is that quick and simple to use.
When you have done this it will show up black on the page you can change the place it's in, orientation and the size of the text as well as the colour, this is simple to do as it's all in one place. When you've done this in the same place that you clicked add, then you can change the colour and the opacity.

This is what it looked like when I put the font where I wanted it to be and added the pictures!
Here I have changed the colour and the opacity making it look much more effective and less stand offish. Everything ties together and it looks simple and effective. It looks good.

That's my over view on My Memories Suite V4, it's great and a software I am glad that I have got. I love using it, and find that it's easy to pick up, you can do pretty much anything that you want and make it look extremely effective. You can use any of the templates and can personalise them to what you want. This is a product that I will use a lot of in the future. It will help to make my photography business more personal and I can not wait to explore with it more. I will do more reviews in the future, so that you can see the fun I'm having out of the programme and also the fun that you guys could have out of this programme!

Bakewell Show - Equestrian Day - 2013

For the first year Bakewell show decided that they would do an extra day before the show starts that is just equestrian things. In magazines this sounded really good but when I looked online there was hardly anything about it other than trade stands would be open, it was £5 and it was free parking. When we got there we found that the majority of the trading stands were closed and wouldn't open until tomorrow and that there wasn't a lot going on. We decided that if they do this day again it needs better advertising and it needs more life! There wasn't a huge amount of footfall, and there wasn't a lot going on in the arenas there was a bit of dressage when we first got there and then the only thing that was really going on was working hunter.

However it offered me a great opportunity to work on my photography skills, I was able to play around with the manual settings, decide whether I wanted my camera on continual shooting or not. I was also able to play around with taking the odder photography shots not just the straight forward and simple over the jump shots. I think I got some pretty good shots and I will show you them all tomorrow when I've put them on my computer. I think if they made it more eventful then I might go to it again next year but it needs more life and uniqueness.

Tomorrow I'm going to look at my pictures and make some more photographs to advertise my photography business at the stables, as Fiona's said she'll put up one of my posters. Not sure what else I am doing tomorrow though.

I Love Pony Club

Today has been a good day, I got up fairly late and got to help my mum out while at the same time doing some driving practice. Which was fun and also really useful. As it's monday this evening was pony club, originally I thought that it was going to be quite quiet but I was wrong. There was three new girls there that seemed really nice and of varied ages. We spent a good hour looking at feeding rules and things to do with feeding, e.g. different types of feed, why some horses eat hay and others haylage, I did find it really interesting though at some points it also got really confusing. When it got to the end we all picked horses that we could put to bed, I was asked if I'd mind helping Grace as she had got one of the little boys and said no that I didn't mind, then Ellie also came down (one of the new girls) to help us. I found this fun to do but also really useful because it made me think more about the things that we do on a daily basis, I liked that they asked questions and the majority of questions I was able to answer, it was fun and a good time was had by everyone.

Tomorrow I am off to the Bakewell show Equestrian Day, normally Bakewell show is only two days and similar to the county show where everything is going on over those two days, however this year for the first time they have decided that they are going to do an equestrian day, with only horses. It will be a good opportunity to test out some more photography skills. It'll be interesting though because so far I have no idea what I'm going to see tomorrow as it is no where on their website. My camera is on charge, memory card being backed up and tripod at the ready.

It's just over a week and half til my competition ends, to enter head over to here and find out how you can enter twice!

For all of you that are interested in competitions don't forget to head over and enter my competition and click HERE!

Yesterday was my own a pony day I got a new badge for mucking out and had a really good and fun time. Millie (who I was working with) and I mucked out three stables and worked on doing haynets. These are both jobs that I found really relaxing. We then had our lunch early and bought in the horses that we were going to be riding. We also tried to hook up Fiona's trailer to her car but the hand break had been put in and it had seized up, so we couldn't move it. When we'd given the horses we got on and doing some riding. I rode for half an hour in the first group working on getting him in an outline and getting him to behave. I then carried on for another half an hour doing walk work and leading the other group, we did lots of creative work including doing triangles. We got off and turned the horses back out we then skipped the stables. Fiona had said that I could go with her and Elaine to bring Soli back home, so we hitched up Kelly's trailer and went to get him. It was really nice to see him as I hadn't seen him in six weeks he looks so much more toned

This morning I had my lesson with Gatsby. I was really aching and not feeling great but I had a fairly good ride. About halfway through we had to take a few minutes for Gatsby and I to relax and chill out as we were both getting too tense. We had no martingale on Gatsby and he was really flinging his head up. He's a good horse to ride but today just wasn't our day. He was showing/telling us that he did not want to work today, I'd almost get him in an outline and then he would fling his head up. We will get there one day, just not today. We got some nice work towards the end when we were both relaxed. We also got a really nice leg yield however when I wanted him to do it for a second time he was having none of it. He showed me how varied horses moods can be.
