He has been named.

Well I have finally got around to naming my baby horse and he is called magic for short. His posh/show name isn't set in concrete yet but it will be either mystical black magic, black magic or maybe even midnight magic, I've not decided yet, I just know that his name will be magic. I'll let you know more when I know more. 

Now I wanted to ask whether you guys had an opinion on clicker training, and if you think it works or not. This is something that I haven't worked with before but am doing my research in to. I also wondered how you guys that have got baby horses got them used to wearing a head collar/halter and did you guys use a foal slip? Obviously I'm just learning and need to do lots more research but I would also be extremely grateful for any opinions or advice that you guys have! 

In other news I have joined the gym and am on a mission to lose weight, tone up and get fit. Hopefully I'll start to see some results soon, but I'll keep you guys updated on all of that. 

I rode Gatsby today and it went really well, we had another bareback ride today and it went really well. I only rode for 30 minutes because after that I started to feel really sick and had to get off to be sick. While I was riding we worked on walk and getting him in to an outline and O.M.G it was so much easier he just fell straight in to an outline. 

But anyway i need to get jack from work soon so I'm heading off.

    Midnight Magic is an awesome name! I don't no anything about clicker training or baby horse training for that matter. The woman I am working student for, who just got a yearling, has told me some about baby horse training. This is some that she told me: get them used to as much as possible early on, and teach them right away to respect your space. It may be cute to have a baby horse rub on you, but it's not fun and even dangerous when they are older.

    Merry is NOT the first horse that Judi has trained with operant conditioning - she's pretty much a pro at it & is writing a new book (her 3rd) specifically about clicker training horses - MerryLegs will be the main character from what I understand.

    I did all of Chrome's initial training with clicker training! I started when he was just under a year (it took him FOREVER to learn to like treats). I've been keeping a blog since I brought him home at five months old so you can go back and see old posts. There are videos and everything if you want to watch them and see what all I did. I LOVE clicker training him! I wish I'd never quit doing it, but I'm having trouble finding a treat he likes that doesn't have sugar in it. He gets fat so easy. I'm going to try to get back into clicker training because I miss it so much. If you have any questions at all feel free to ask me. If I don't know the answer I can probably find it for you. I'm so excited for you!

      Thank you so much! that's a great help, I think that I am definitely going to give clicker training ago, i'm expecting to not be very good at it but somethings got to be better than nothing right? I know it's going to take a while! plus i love reading your blog, i only started reading it part way in so it gives me an excuse to go back to the start lol ;) thank you!

      Yay! I'm so excited!! Don't you have a dog? You should start practicing with him so you can get your timing with the clicker down. There are tons of clicker training videos on Youtube to get you started. Look up charging the clicker and target training. Having good timing with the click and treat delivery will be very helpful when you first start working with Magic. I started out with clicker training my dogs so it was easy to transition to Chrome when it was time. :D I think you'll love it and be good at it. It's hard to do anything wrong with clicker training. You just have to be strict about the no mugging rule. That's what "grownups are talking" is for. Have you looked at the Alexandra Kurland website yet? The cool thing about clicker training is that since it's all positive even if you mess up it's no big deal. You just retrain whatever it was you wanted hehe.

Magic's 2nd day in his new home

It has been a while since I have posted on here but I thought it was the perfect time to restart the blog. So to start with I'll give you all an update on what's been going on over the years since I've posted and then I will be back to regularly posting and keeping you all updated on the world of magic.  The first big change who I need to introduce is Jaxon, Jaxon is mine and Jack's 7 month old baby, he was born on the 7th July 2020. Part of this blog will be dedicated to overcoming the challenges of having a small child and owning a horse, even when everyone told me it was impossible to do. Olympics - good bad or both?

In the Beijing Olympics in 2008 the horses used in the pentathlon were said to cause farcical scenes with fall after fall after fall. This was said to be the fault of the horses that were either hired or loaned to the competitors. It was not blamed to be rider error or a combination of both rider error and horse error, it was labelled as being the horses fault or this is what it said in ' Horse and Hound Magazine'. This horse was said to have been to spooky and sharp, but is it not a combination of rider's aids and rider error AS WELL as the horse being spooky. Can we really just blame it on the horse, when we are the ones that tell the horse what to do, by no means am i saying it was 'just the riders fault' couldn't it have been a combination of both?.    For the London 2012 Olympics it was said that a total of two years if no longer was spent attempting to find the right horse for the right competitor.
